Federal Government Seeks Collaboration with IOCs for Niger Delta Development

The Federal Government is actively seeking collaboration with International Oil Companies (IOCs) to implement the Host Community Trust Fund and address environmental challenges, gas flaring, and health issues in the Niger Delta region. Engr. Abubakar Momoh, the Minister of Niger Delta Development, emphasized the importance of this partnership during a collaborative meeting with IOCs and development partners in Abuja on Tuesday.

The meeting aimed to foster collaboration, brainstorming, and sharing the administration’s vision for the Niger Delta region under the leadership of Bola Tinubu. In his keynote address, Minister Momoh highlighted the commitment of the Ministry to fast-tracking development despite financial constraints, emphasizing the need for collaboration with IOCs to overcome challenges and fulfill the Ministry’s mandate.

Key areas of concern addressed by the Minister included the promotion of peace and security in the region. Momoh stressed the significance of sustained peace to create a conducive environment for government and private economic activities, emphasizing the importance of empowerment, particularly for the youth and women.

The Minister sought collaboration with IOCs to implement the Host Community Trust Fund in line with a presidential directive and the stipulations of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA). He outlined a strategic implementation work plan, urging IOCs to collaborate on projects and programs to ensure accountability and prevent duplication of developmental efforts in the region.

Additionally, Minister Momoh called on IOCs to expedite the completion of projects under their Corporate Social Responsibility schemes to address infrastructural gaps in the Niger Delta. He sought technical support from IOCs to combat oil theft, emphasizing the need for proactive measures and collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

Expressing optimism about a productive interaction, Minister Momoh called for support and collaboration from IOCs, industry players, and major stakeholders. He highlighted the commitment of resources, expertise, and a shared vision to achieve collective goals and bring about positive developments in the Niger Delta region.
