Demolition Drama: Edo State Security Network Razes Former Deputy Governor’s Residence

Philip Shaibu

Officials from the Edo State Security Network (ESSN) and members of the Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) orchestrated the demolition of a security post situated at the residence of Philip Shaibu, the former deputy governor of Edo State. The operation, which occurred in GRA, Benin City, received cover from armed police officers on Sunday.

The security post, positioned at the entrance to Shaibu’s residence and adjacent to the Benin Golf Course, served as a temporary shelter for security personnel overseeing the premises. Video footage capturing the demolition has circulated on social media platforms, depicting a bulldozer tearing down the structure while onlookers, including residents and police officers, observed.

This development comes in the wake of Shaibu’s impeachment as deputy governor by the Edo State House of Assembly. His removal followed the adoption of a report by a seven-member investigative panel, chaired by retired Justice S. A. Omonuwa, and established by Daniel Okungbowa, the Chief Judge of Edo State. Shaibu faced accusations of misconduct, perjury, and the disclosure of government secrets.

In response to his impeachment, Governor Godwin Obaseki swiftly appointed Omobayo Godwins as the new deputy governor. Shaibu attributed his removal to his aspirations to contest the 2024 Edo governorship election, revealing the longstanding tensions between himself and Obaseki dating back to the lead-up to the Edo governorship election.
