Delta state government meeting with Okere and Agbarha community representatives

In response to the recent conflict between Okere and Agbassa regarding the Wado City Advocacy and the renaming of the UPU Secretariat on Okere Road, Warri, a peace meeting was convened at the Government House in Asaba. The meeting was presided over by the Secretary to the Delta State Government, Kingsley Emu, representing His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Delta State Governor.

Representatives from Okere Community included Hon. Barr. David Oki and Comr. Ameachi Ogbitse Ogbonna, while Agbarha was represented by Destiny Agbadia and other delegates. Additionally, key figures present included the Executive Chairman of Warri South Local Government Council, Hon. Dr. Michael Tidi, the Delta State Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development, Comr. Agbateyinro Weyinmi, the Acting President of Itsekiri National Youth Council (INYC), Comr. Godwin Utienyin, and the President of the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU) Youth Wing, Ughere Blessed.

During the meeting, a consensus was reached, and all parties agreed to maintain the status quo, ensuring that the UPU Secretariat (Urhobo House) in Okere Community retains its address at No.18 Okere Road, Warri. Furthermore, the proposed nomenclature “Wado City” for certain areas in Warri was collectively rejected. The full resolutions are captured below:

  • All parties agreed to maintain status quo and flatly rejected the move to designate parts of Warri Township as WADO CITY.
  • The headquarters of Urhobo Progress Union (Urhobo House) should retain its official address as No 18 Okere Road, Warri while the State Government undertook to reinstall the billboard for the secretariat of the union which reflects this agreed address
  • All parties agreed to work with each other and maintain peace and harmony in Warri Township which is especially necessary to support the renewed drive for infrastructural development in the city, and
  • Delta State Government will deal decisively with any violation of this agreement.

The participants committed to fostering peace and harmony within the oil city of Warri.
