State Govt Mobilizes Contractor to Open up Blocked Canals Around Stadium Area in Warri Metropolis…

…As WUEDA DG advises residents, traders, to relocate from canal’s right of way.

The Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori has mobilized Levant Construction Company to open up and desilt the old waterways, and construct new ones to allow free flow of water around the Stadium area to Warri River.

A representative of the contracting firm on Tuesday April 24, 2024 conducted the Director General of the supervising Agency, Warri, Uvwie and Environs Special Area Devt Agency, WUEDA, Prince Godwin Ejinyere and his team on a guided tour of the canal from Bowen Avenue bridge to the Warri River, with a swamp boogie on site already de-silting the blocked canal.

The contractor told the WUEDA DG that the project would be delivered speedily if the traders and those residing in shanties on both sides of the canal could be asked to relocate from the canal’s right-of-way.

After painstakingly inspecting the length of the canal, the WUEDA DG, Hon. Ejinyere observed that the waterway was blocked by the refuse indiscriminately dumped by traders and residents in Warri Township, charging them to desist forthwith.

Prince Godwin Ejinyere, however, commended the community leaders for their support, and urged them to keep it up by ensuring that the canal de-silting project is completed without delay to solve the perennial flooding problem in parts of the old Warri Town.

He told the swamp boogie operator to deepen and widen the canal, using available spaces on both sides. This, he said, would further ease the free flow of water during and after heavy rains.

To this end, Prince Ejinyere said illegal structures blocking the canal’s right-of-way would be demolished to enhance the drainage capacity of the canal.

He said water from Bowen Avenue, Odion Road, Iyara, Pessu and Macaiver market areas, Stadium and Cemetery Road areas, would flow easily into the Warri River when blocked waterways were opened up and de-silted.

Hon. Prince Ejinyere commended the State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for laying the foundation for the upliftment of Warri, Uvwie and their environs, and also for mobilizing the contractor, Levant, to commence the canal de-silting project and construction of new ones.

He also commended the contractor for starting well by delivering Govt projects timely and according to specifications. He said so far, the host communities had cooperated with the contractor, adding that all issues relating to the project would be fully addressed.

In an interview with newsmen, the youth leader of Otovwodo Agbarha-Warri Community, Comrade Precious Bazunu thanked the Delta State Govt for the timely intervention in the perennial flooding problem facing the area.

He promised that the community would complement the good works of the Agency by ensuring that no refuse was dumped into the canal during and after de-silting and opening it up.

Prince Ejinyere was accompanied on the inspection visit by civil engineers in the Agency.
