Slain Bayelsa Driver Asiayei: IPDI, IPF write IG, Gov Diri, CP Bayelsa, Demand Justice

Civil society groups under the auspices of the Ijaw People’s Development Initiative, IPDI and the Ijaw Publishers’ Forum, IPF, in a joint statement have called on the Inspector General of Police, Mr Kayode Igbetokun, the governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, and the commissioner of police, Bayelsa Command to swing into action and bring justice for the gruesome murder of Mr Benalayefa Asiayei, aged 40 years by a trigger happy policeman.

The said victim reportedly lived in Yenegoa but hailed from the Ayakoromo community in the Burutu Local government area of Delta State.

According to eyewitnesses, Mr Asiayei was fatally shot by a member of the Operation Douakpo police team in Yenagoa over an argument of N200 bribe demand which the victim refused to offer.

The groups, however have said enough of the too many police brutal killings of innocent Nigerian citizens, adding that panel of inquiry should be constituted to probe into the killing in a view of bringing the erring police officer to book.

The president of both groups, Comrade Ozobo Austin said the police authorities poor handling of cases of police unlawful killings of Nigerian citizens was the cause of the continued police massacre on innocent citizens in the country.

His words, “some months ago I raised the issue of police extortion in the name of stop and search operations with the commissioner of police, Delta state, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, he took side with the police and ended up staging a serious query with me. His actions show that the police authorities may be benefiting from the corrupt acts of the police officers on road duties”.

“It is too sad and callous for a police officer that is meant to protect lives and properties to kill innocent citizens because of the N200 bribe collection. We will not accept any plea that the incident took place by mistake. This kind of unprovoked incident can’t be done by mistake. It was a deliberate act. It is a case of murder and it should be treated as a murder case. It is our humble demand that justice be served. The police authorities and the Bayelsa State government should ensure that the culprit should die by hanging or by facing a shooting squad.

“We will employ self help to seek justice if the Bayelsa State government and the Nigerian police authorities failed to do the needful by providing justice for the victim’s family. I repeat myself a police officer who valued N200 more than a human being doesn’t deserve to live. But deserves to die by hanging or facing a shooting squad”.

“The sad part of it, is that the young man of three children was the bread winner of his family, and was also preparing for his father’s burial when he was exterminated. This is a broad day wickedness, an act that can’t be forgiven by God”, the groups added.
